Senator Miriam Defensor Santiago,Calling citizen and students to “Join the War” against Senate Bill No. 3299 taken up in plenary on Wednesday, Santiago said the new version of the excise tax on alcohol and tobacco is “so watered down” that “it should be called ‘the death star bill’.”.
Senator Miriam Santiago blasted Senator Ralph Recto’s ways and means committee in a series of social media posts on Thursday upon reading its version of the "Sin Tax Bill"
Senator Miriam Defensor Santiago,expressed her feelings on her Twitter account..
Miriam said,“I am gobsmacked at the committee report. It is an abject surrender to the very rich and very powerful tobacco and alcohol lobby.
Upon seeing her name listed on the committee report as co-author when it has “no recognized resemblance” to the precedent Senate Bill No. 3249 she originally authored.
“Under the Santiago bill, government will raise P60 billion for the first year. The Recto bill will earn only P15 billion,” she added.
When Senator Ralph Recto said in his sponsorship speech,
"The newer bill cuts down previously proposed incremental tax hikes on tobacco and alcohol products by almost half in an attempt to craft a more “reasonable, realistic and responsible” taxation scheme.
But Senator
Miriam Defensor Santiago discredited another of Recto’s argument to make the products relatively more accessible to those in the lower socio-economic classes.
